Concerns Regarding the Water Supply in Nassau County

In an effort to repair leaks in the city’s upstate aqueduct system, it plans to reopen up to 52 shuttered wells in Queens as part of its “Water for the Future” program.  With the natural tendency for water to flow from Nassau County to Queens, residents are concerned about the possibility of an increase in salt water intrusion on both the north and south shores.  In addition, there could be a shift in the direction of underground plumes of contamination and a general drawdown of the aquifer system.
